Limerick Gardaí net ‘large haul’ in fight against hunger

Gardaí in Limerick are claiming a major victory against organised hunger in the city after a night time raid on local take away outlets.

In a pre planned operation, up to 50 officers swooped on various locations silmultaneously, including such notorious eat-outs known locally as “Supermacs” and the “Chicken – Hut” as well as a well known 24 hour petrol station on the Dock Road.

The raids are believed to have uncovered many different items used in the city’s notorious food trade, including up to 10 kilos of a meat concoction hidden amongst some bread-like wrapping, and a large quantity of substances with the street names “garlicandcheese”, “currycheese” and tacoandcheese”.

It is believed members of the Emergency Hunger Response Unit were involved in the raids.

Gardaí remove evidence

Chief Superintendent Padraig Coleslaw said “We are claiming this as a major victory in keeping these well organised take away gangs in tow. They have got to be reminded that not filling a Gardas bag of chips over the top or throwing in a free coffee is a crime in this country, and will not go unpunished”.

The evidence seized in the raids was due to be put on display today at Henry St Garda Station, but in a new development Gardai say all seized items had mysteriously disappeared overnight.

I was checking in on Twitter earlier and noticed that @glinner (Graham Linehan – creator of the IT Crowd) had sent out the call for a short poem in praise of the IT dept. I sent a couple of silly little poems and apparently they liked one of them and might use it. Which would be amazing! Anyway, whether it gets in or not I am extremely eagerly looking forward to Season 4, which is currently filming.

Google launched ‘translate for animals‘, Starbucks started selling Plenta (3.8 litre) and Micra (0.06l) coffees. CERN announced plans to build a second large hadron collider in the London Underground, and David Beckham became manager of the Australian soccer team.

My own contribution was a link on my facebook page to a story about Brendan Gleeson being signed up to play Father Ted in a new series. No sure how many of my friends clicked through, certainly nobody admitted to it. Oh and I wished Manuel Almunia a happy birthday.

A German brewery is cashing in on the name of a small Austrian town called “Fucking” to release a new beer – “Fucking Hell” (hell means ‘light’ in German, apparently). Here’s a link to an article about it on spiegel.de. I particularly like the last line – “The Bavarian towns of Kissing and Petting have the same problem, as does the eastern German town of Pissen. But so far, there are no plans to name a beer after them.”

No plans for the Limerick town of Effin to produce their own “Effin Lager” though.
